DOTSTARS portrays miraculous moments by likening the optical illusion—where white dots appear to glow black—to the radiance of stars. Composed solely of dots and squares, the work questions the fundamental act of “seeing” itself, making the illusion all the more striking and memorable.

Since ancient times, it has been said that if you finish making a wish before a shooting star disappears, that wish will come true—whether for a rich harvest, love, or peace. Throughout history, people have entrusted countless hopes to falling stars. Miracles are not something we witness because we spend time or money; they occur simply because we happen to be present in that fleeting moment. The first shooting star I ever saw appeared as I was heading to a convenience store late at night to buy a snack. It was so sudden that I couldn’t make a wish in time. Yet I still remember that scene as vividly as if it were yesterday. Perhaps that is why moments that last only an instant can feel eternal, and why such sights captivate us so deeply.

I created DOTSTARS with a wish for “a future that can be enjoyed by everyone—from children to adults.” The work requires no specialized knowledge or interpretation; it invites intuitive engagement from all viewers. Whether questioning the mysterious black glow of the illusion or finding calm as if gazing at a real night sky, each viewer brings their own experience.
