人生で初めて見た流れ星は本当に綺麗でした。
地球の奇跡は、時間やお金を費やしたから見られるものではなく、奇跡の瞬間に偶然私たちが居合わせたにすぎません。だからこそ息を呑むほど神秘的な光景を、昨日のように記憶しているのだと思います。DOTSTARSは、白いドットが黒く光って見える錯視効果（きらめき格子）を星の輝きに見立て、地球の夜空を描きました。ドットとスクエアで構成された画面構成は、特定の位置に配置することで錯視が発生し、静止した絵画がまるで動く絵画へと変化します。さらにドットとスクエア以外の装飾を排除することで、「ものを見る」という行為そのものに着目した作品です。
The first shooting star I ever saw in my life was truly beautiful.The miracles of Earth are not something we witness because we have spent time or money; rather, they are moments of wonder that we happen to encounter by chance. That is why such breathtaking and mysterious scenes remain in our memory as vividly as if they had happened yesterday.
DOTSTARS depicts the night sky of Earth by likening the optical illusion in which white dots appear to glow black—the scintillating grid illusion—to the light of stars. The composition, constructed solely from dots and squares, generates optical illusions through precise placement, transforming a static painting into one that appears to move. By eliminating all ornamentation other than dots and squares, the work focuses attention on the very act of “seeing” itself.
本来人間は、目から入った光の信号を視神経で受け取り、脳が感知することで対象物を認識します。しかし、脳の働きには多くの謎が残されているため、なぜ白いドットが黒く光って見えるのか科学では未だ解明されていません。科学で解明できない錯視を、鑑賞者の想像力に委ねることで、それぞれ視点から作品を自由に解釈できます。もしかすると、これまで解明できなかった科学が、鑑賞者によって解き明かされるかもしれません。
自然界で作られたドットと人間が生み出したスクエアを、黒と白の配色で組み合わせることで、否定や対立ではなく互いを補い合うシンボルとして表現しました。これらの構造は、オプ・アートによる「視覚の不思議」を起点とし、もの派やミニマルアートが持つ「素材と空間」の関係を、現代の文脈として作品に再構成されています
Originally, humans perceive objects by receiving light signals through the optic nerve, which are then interpreted by the brain. However, because many aspects of the brain’s function remain unknown, science has yet to explain why white dots appear to glow black. By entrusting this scientifically unexplained illusion to the viewer’s imagination, the work allows each person to interpret it freely from their own perspective. Perhaps discoveries that science has not yet uncovered may one day be revealed by the viewers themselves.
By combining dots found in nature with squares created by humans, using a black-and-white color scheme, the work presents them not as elements of negation or opposition, but as symbols that complement one another. These structures take the “mystery of vision” explored in Op Art as their starting point, while reconfiguring the relationship between “material and space” found in Mono-ha and Minimal Art within a contemporary context.
私の願いは子供から大人まで価値観や隔たりを超えて、すべての人が平等に楽しめる作品を作ることです。しかしテクノロジーの進化が止まらないデジタル社会では、スマートフォンの平均利用時間が７時間を超え、人々は下を向いて生活することが日常化しました。さらに、個人化したコンテンツの普及によって、人と人とのつながりは分断されつつあります。私たちは求める情報を瞬時に得られる一方で、あらかじめ用意された答えに向かって、無意識に誘導されているのかもしれません。
選択が自動化されたデジタル社会において、DOTSTARSは「見えているものがすべて正解とは限らない」と鑑賞者に問いかけます。「なぜ光って見えるのか」という個人の疑問を、鑑賞者同士の対話へと昇華させることで、作品を介した新しいコミュニケーションが生まれるでしょう。
My wish is to create works that can be enjoyed equally by everyone—from children to adults—beyond differences in values or backgrounds. Yet in today’s digital society, where technological advancement shows no sign of slowing, average smartphone usage has exceeded seven hours a day, and living with our eyes cast downward has become routine. Furthermore, as personalized content spreads, connections between people are increasingly fragmented. While we can instantly obtain the information we seek, we may also be unconsciously guided toward pre-prepared answers.
In a digital society where choices are increasingly automated, DOTSTARS asks viewers to question the idea that “what we see is always correct.” By transforming an individual’s question—“Why does it appear to glow?”—into dialogue among viewers, new forms of communication can emerge through the artwork itself.
